Which wool doesn't itch? The Ultimate Itch Test: From Cashmere to Virgin Wool 🧶🔬

“Mom, this is itchy!”—there’s hardly a phrase you hear more often during the cold season. Yet it’s almost never because of “the wool” itself, but rather because of a single number: the fiber thickness. We’ll explain why wool itches, which types are gentle on the skin, and how you can avoid buying itchy items in the future.

In short: Whether wool is itchy depends primarily on the thickness of the fibers. Fibers thicker than about 30 micrometers (µm) are too stiff to conform to the skin and irritate the nerve endings. Cashmere (approx. 14–19 µm) and fine merino wool (under approx. 19 µm) are the least itchy. Regular virgin wool, mohair, and coarser alpaca varieties, on the other hand, are more likely to be itchy.

Why does wool feel scratchy in the first place? 🔬

The itchiness isn’t an allergic reaction—it’s purely mechanical. Every wool fiber has a thickness measured in micrometers (µm). For comparison: a human hair is about 50–70 µm thick.

  • 🪡 Fine fibers bend away as soon as they touch the skin—all you feel is softness.
  • 🌵 Thick fibers over about 30 µm, on the other hand, are too stiff. Their ends press against the skin like tiny needle tips, triggering that typical tingling and itching sensation.

Experts refer to the “Comfort Factor”: the percentage of fibers that are 30 µm or thinner. For clothing worn directly against the skin, this should be at least 95%. Even just a few coarse fibers in the yarn can be enough to make a sweater itch.

There are also other, minor factors: the scaly structure of the fiber, short fiber ends sticking out of the yarn, and overly tight weaving.

Wool allergy? Mostly a myth 🤧

Many parents believe their child “can’t tolerate wool.” A review article by dermatologists and allergists in the journal *Acta Dermato-Venereologica * (Zallmann et al., 2017) reaches a clear conclusion: There is no reliable evidence that the wool fiber itself is an allergen. Skin reactions are almost always caused by coarse fibers. The authors consider allergic reactions to lanolin (wool grease) or processing residues to be very unlikely in modern wool clothing.

Even more intriguing: In a study published in the British Journal of Dermatology, 39 infants and toddlers (ages 4 weeks to 3 years) with atopic dermatitis wore clothing made of superfine merino wool and cotton for six weeks each. The eczema improved significantly with the fine wool, and parents reported less itching. So fine wool fibers aren’t the problem—they can actually be beneficial.

Important: If your child has skin problems, always consult a pediatrician or dermatologist.

The Big Itch Test: Which Wool Itches, and Which Doesn’t?

Type of Wool Fiber thickness (approx.) Does it itch?
Cashmere 14–19 µm ☁️ No—one of the finest wool fibers available
Merino (superfine/extra-fine) 15–20 µm ☁️ Generally not
Merino (standard) 20–24 µm 🙂 Rarely; possible for those with sensitive skin
Baby/Royal Alpaca 18–23 µm 🙂 Usually not
Alpaca (Standard) 23–30+ µm 😕 Sometimes
Kid Mohair 20–30 µm 😕 Often causes a slight tingling sensation
Mohair (adult goats) 30–40 µm 🌵 Yes
Regular sheep’s wool / virgin wool 25–40 µm 🌵 Common

Values are typical ranges from technical literature and fiber databases—they may vary depending on the animal, origin, and grade.

Is alpaca wool itchy? 🦙

Alpaca has a reputation for not being itchy—but that’s only partly true. The fiber contains no lanolin and has flatter scales than sheep’s wool. However, fineness is also a key factor here: Baby and Royal alpaca (under approx. 23 µm) are very soft, whereas standard alpaca and yarns containing individual coarse fibers can feel noticeably prickly. Is alpaca wool itchy? For lower-quality varieties: often yes.

Is virgin wool itchy? 🐑

It’s worth taking a look at the fine print here: “virgin wool” says nothing about the fineness. According to the EU Textile Labelling Regulation, the term simply means that the wool has never before been processed into a finished product—in other words, “new” wool, not recycled material. The label doesn’t reveal whether it comes from a fine Merino sheep or a hardy farm sheep with a fiber diameter of 35 µm. That’s why virgin wool is often itchy.

Is mohair itchy? ✨

Mohair comes from the Angora goat and is quite thick in adult animals, at 30–40 µm. In addition, mohair yarns are often brushed to make them look fluffy—the protruding fibers then tickle directly against the skin. Kid mohair from young goats is finer, but can still cause itching on the neck.

Does merino wool feel scratchy against the skin? 🌿

Fine merino wool is rightly considered gentle on the skin. But pay attention to the label: “Merino” alone doesn’t automatically mean super-fine. Standard merino with a fiber diameter over 20 µm can definitely irritate sensitive skin.

Does cashmere itch? The honest answer 🤍

High-quality cashmere is one of the finest natural fibers in the world. In the U.S., it’s even regulated by law: Only fibers with an average diameter of no more than 19 µm and a maximum of 3% of fibers exceeding 30 µm may be sold as “cashmere.” PAPA LOBSTER cashmere measures 15–16 µm —well below the itch threshold.

If a cashmere sweater still feels itchy, there’s almost always a reason:

  • 🐐 Guard hairs: In addition to its fine undercoat, the cashmere goat also has coarse guard hairs. If the goat isn’t carefully dehaired, these guard hairs end up in the yarn.
  • ✂️ Short fibers: Cheap cashmere often consists of short fibers with protruding ends—which cause a prickly sensation and pilling.
  • 🧪 Blends: “Cashmere-touch” or “with cashmere content” often means: a lot of sheep’s wool or synthetics, very little cashmere.
  • 🔥 Incorrect care: Washing at too high a temperature damages the fiber cuticles—the sweater becomes felted and stiff.

Our tip: Checking the label (“100% cashmere”) and looking for a realistic price are the best ways to avoid itchy sweaters.

Soft wool that doesn’t itch: Here’s what to look for when shopping for kids 👶

Children’s skin is thinner and more sensitive than adults’—and kids are honest. If it’s itchy, they won’t wear it. Here’s how to find pieces they’ll actually wear:

  • 🔍 Fiber thickness over wool type: Ask specifically for micron measurements. Anything under 19 µm is a safe bet.
  • 🏷️ Read the label: “100% cashmere” or “superfine merino” instead of vague terms like “wool blend.”
  • 🤲 The neck test: Don’t test wool with your fingers—test it on your neck or the inside of your wrist. The skin there is just as sensitive as a child’s.
  • 🧵 Check the details: Soft cuffs, flat seams, no stiff labels at the nape of the neck.

That’s why at PAPA LOBSTER, we use only 100% cashmere — from baby blankets to children’s cardigans.

Can you make scratchy wool softer? 🧺

A little bit. A coarse fiber will never become fine, but these tricks can reduce the itchiness:

  • 🫧 Wool detergent with lanolin nourishes the fibers and makes them more supple.
  • 💆 Adding hair conditioner to the hand-wash water (one teaspoon, let it sit for 10–15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly) coats the fiber scales.
  • 👕 Wear a thin shirt underneath —the simplest solution for itchy favorite pieces.

And what about cashmere? A wool cycle at a maximum of 30 °C is all it takes—the fabric actually gets even softer with every wash.

Softness isn’t a coincidence 🤍

Whether wool is itchy isn’t a matter of luck—it’s a matter of the fiber. If you know the micron count, you’ll avoid itchy mispurchases and arguments when getting dressed. And you’ll give your child something you can’t see but can feel every day: clothing that simply makes them feel comfortable.

Frequently Asked Questions – Which wool doesn’t itch? ❓

Which wool is the least itchy?

Cashmere (approx. 14–19 µm) and superfine merino wool (under approx. 19 µm) are the least itchy. Fiber thickness is key: the finer the fiber, the softer the wool feels against the skin.

Why does wool itch?

Fibers thicker than about 30 µm are too stiff to conform to the skin. Their ends press against the skin and irritate the nerve endings—which feels like scratching or itching. A true wool allergy is very rare.

Is alpaca wool itchy?

That depends on the quality. Baby and Royal alpaca are very soft, whereas standard alpaca with thicker fibers can be itchy.

Is cashmere itchy?

High-quality, carefully dehaired cashmere does not itch. If a cashmere garment itches, it’s usually due to coarse guard hairs, short fibers, or a blend with other fibers.

Which wool is best for babies and children?

Fibers under 19 µm, such as cashmere or superfine merino wool. They’re gentle on children’s sensitive skin, regulate temperature and moisture, and studies show that fine wool fibers are well tolerated even by those with eczema.
