Take a deep breath first. Before you give up on your treasure, read this - because often all is not lost.
Why does cashmere shrink? π¬

Cashmere doesn't just shrink - it felts. The fibers have a fine, scale-like surface. Too much heat, friction or the wrong detergent causes these scales to stand up, become entangled and wedge into each other. The result: smaller, firmer, more rigid.
As long as the fiber structure is not permanently fused, the snagged scales can be opened again with moisture and gentle stretching - the item is salvageable.
The SOS rescue bath π

You need: wash bowl, lukewarm water (max. 30 Β°C), high-quality wool detergent or mild baby shampoo, two dry towels.
Step 1 - The relaxing bath
Pour water + a generous dash of shampoo into the bowl. Put the sweater in, gently squeeze it in and leave to soak. leave to rest for 20-30 minutes. The shampoo acts like a lubricant around the tangled scales and opens up the structure.
Step 2 - Gently squeeze out
Never wring out - this destroys the fibers immediately. Instead: Squeeze the water out between your hands, then lay flat on a towel.
Step 3 - Stretch
Use your fingertips to stretch the length and width of the garment centimetre by centimetre - sleeves, shoulders, hem. Repeat several times while drying.
The secret weapon: steam π¨
If the bath alone is not enough, the steam iron comes into play. Medium wool setting, keep a distance from the fabric - never press directly. The steam minimally opens the fiber structure again. Use this moment to stretch the fabric further into shape with the other hand. Surprisingly effective.
Honest reality check π
If the sweater feels as stiff as a board and the stitches have melted into a dense mass, the protein structure has changed permanently. It is then no longer possible to salvage it completely.
But even then, it is not for the garbage can. Wonderful things are made from matted cashmere:
- βοΈ Cut off sleeves β cozy wrist warmers
- π‘οΈ Cut the material to size β Cover for the hot water bottle
- π Cutting out insoles for children's shoes
So that it doesn't happen again π§Ί
Three rules to remember:
- Wool wash cycle - gentle drum movement, max. 400 rpm
- Cashmere or wool detergent - use sparingly, never use normal laundry detergent
- Dry flat - never hang up, always lay flat on a towel
Don't be afraid of fine natural fibers
If you understand the fiber, you lose your fear. High-quality cashmere is tougher than its reputation - with the right care, it will last you for many years.
